Access to Justice

The Access to Justice Project is an ongoing initiative dedicated to promoting fairness, equity, and efficiency within Nigeria’s justice system. The project currently operates pilot sites in Kano and FCT Abuja, with plans for future expansion.

Key Focus Areas & Activities

  1. Prison Visitation & Legal Support
    • Conducting regular visits to ensure humane treatment and uphold inmates’ rights.
    • Providing legal aid to those lacking adequate representation.
  2. Reducing Prolonged Detention
    • Addressing systemic delays in case processing to prevent extended incarceration.
    • Collaborating with judicial stakeholders to enhance case efficiency.
  3. Advocating for Bail Accessibility
    • Supporting the release of individuals accused of bailable offenses who lack financial resources.
    • Providing legal aid and financial assistance to secure fair bail conditions.
  4. Rehabilitation & Reintegration Support
    • Assisting ex-prisoners in reintegrating into society through vocational training and support networks.
    • Implementing initiatives to reduce recidivism and promote a rehabilitative approach to justice

Sustained Impact & Expansion

  • Data-Driven Advocacy: Using insights from pilot sites in Kano and FCT Abuja to inform policy recommendations and system-wide improvements.
  • Community & Stakeholder Engagement: Strengthening partnerships with legal professionals, government agencies, and civil society organizations.
  • Scalability & Digital Outreach: Leveraging digital tools to expand legal awareness and remote legal support services.
